I’m wondering how many of you came close to naming the painting and the artist. I had one person say they knew they had seen the painting but couldn’t name it. The micro view shows a man lying down. He is wearing a stripped coat and behind his shoulder we see the mane of a lion and the lions muzzle.
Thanks to Michelle Behl of Salt Lake City, UT and Emily Systma of Jersey City, NJ who both sent in the name of the correct artist and the title of the painting. They both left wonderful clues in the comment section.
The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau,
Heneri Rousseau was a Parisian artist who lived from 1844 to 1910. He was a self taught painter and began painting at the age of 40. Then as he turned 49 he retired from the customs office to start his full time art career. He is known for is naive style of painting. His best know works are centered around jungle themes. You can see The Sleeping Gypsy and some of his other works at The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC.
