How to Use Words.

Abstract painting with words

I love words and value  them highly and enjoy reading a well crafted story or essay. As a painter I  shy away from incorporating words because I like letting the colors, shapes, lines and textures of a painting speak for themselves. However every now and then a word or a phrase does find it’s place in my work.

The above painting was commissioned this summer by a dear friend who wanted words of scripture as a part of the composition. She purchased this painting  as a going away gift for her beloved pastor who is moving to a new congregation this fall.

Incorporating words into my paintings may be a fun way to communicate thoughts and ideas. For sure they are a challenge to incorporate as elemental components of design and composition.

I would love your impressions or feedback about using words in a painting.
