Celebrating  a new born baby into ones home is a blessed experience and one that calls for some special adornment and preparation. The painting above, The Peaceable Kingdom, was commissioned by  Nathan and Ashley Rippke of Franklin Tennessee to hang in their nursery as they welcome their new baby from Ethiopia. The painting is a three dimensional piece. The tree, lion and lamb are cut from a separate piece of wood and then mounted on the background panel creating a three dimensional relief. This piece measure 30″ x 30 “and is hand made from building the wood frame to the final coat of varnish. Below is a photo documentary of the steps I took in making this unique painting. There were many steps in between but the ones below will give you an idea of the work and time that goes into one of these paintings.

My best wishes to Nathan and Ashley as they welcome their new baby into their lives and their home. You can read more about Nathan and Ashley and their adoption journey at Lifted From The Water.

Cutting the wood for the frame on my compound mitering saw.

Attaching the frame to the birch plywood with wood glue and nails.

Setting the braces in the back to insure hat the frame does not warp.

Sanding the the frame.

Drawing the lion, lamb and tree on a separate piece of birch plywood.

The background frame has been coated with two layers of white gesso.

The tree, lion and lamb have been delicately cut out on a scroll saw and placed against the background.

The tree, leaves and birds have been painted in acrylics.

The lion lamb and water were then painted.

I then started to paint the background panel which consists of the sky and the mountains.

This side view of shows you the dimensionality of the tree, lamb and the lion.

The finished piece is hanging in my living room until I  mail it to Tennessee.

I was delighted to create this piece for Nathan and Ashley as they welcome their new baby into their lives. May The Peaceable Kingdom bring you  all both joy and wonder  as you journey together as a family.
