Where are You? Where do you live? What are the physical characteristics of your environment?
These questions seem simple enough to answer yet they can have many layers when asked from an artistic point of view. Do you take time to notice the people, places, shapes and structures that make up your physical environment and that shape your daily experience? I often wonder if we, as a modern culture, ever take the time necessary to consider how we are shaped by our natural environment? Here in Helena one is constantly surrounded by the mountains that boarder the Helena Valley. My eyes daily fall upon the hills and mountains in all directions. The purple and blue hues of the Rockies standing tall above the lush green and golden grasses of the Helena valley seem to propel me into the creative process . Although my art can take many shapes and forms I find myself being lured into painting the expansive landscape around me. Is it possible that the land we live upon has a greater hold on us than we realize?
Here is a new painting I recently finished. The mountains are of no particular place but are rather a pictorial representation of the many daily views I have of the Helena Valley. I framed it in an old window frame that was given to me. It measures, 21″ x 28″
