The Fog Warning

Winslow Homer

1836 -1910

Winslow Homer is one of America’s best and most prolific painters of the 19th century. The Fog Warning above is considered one of his best master pieces. I love this painting for three reasons. First is the sense of drama and action Homer portrays in the scene. In fact it almost makes me sea sick as I imagine my self in the boat. Given the angle of the boat Homer invites us right into the fisherman’s space. The second reason I like the painting is the placement of the fish. I find myself wanting to alert the fisherman to the fact his catch of the day might just slip out the back end. Who would want to loose a fish that big? Lastly the rich deep green of the water is so beautiful and realistic that I can almost taste the salty sea as it ebbs and flows from one height to another. Yes I agree this is one of America’s finest paintings and one of her most beloved artists.

What they call talent is nothing but the capacity for doing continuous work in the right way. ”
